Question 35: Economy and Social Development

With what purpose is the Government of India promoting the concept of "Mega Food Parks" ?

  1. 1.To provide good infrastructure facilities for the food processing industry.
  2. 2.To increase the processing of perishable items and reduce wastage.
  3. 3.To provide emerging and eco-friendly food processing technologies to entrepreneurs.

Select the correct answer using the codes given below :

a1 only
b1 and 2 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Mega Food Parks, under a scheme of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, are clusters with a central processing centre, collection centres, cold chains and storage, and plots for food processing units, so that farm produce reaches processors with less wastage. Their aims are common infrastructure for the industry and more processing of perishables. The scheme does not supply new, eco-friendly processing technologies to entrepreneurs, so statement 3 is not an aim.

  • 1. The parks provide common infrastructure for food processing.
  • 2. They aim to process more perishables and cut wastage.
  • 3. Supplying new eco-friendly technologies to entrepreneurs is not their purpose.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: They aim to process more perishables and cut wastage.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Supplying new eco-friendly technologies to entrepreneurs is not their purpose.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Gives only the infrastructure aim and omits the reduction of wastage.
  • (b) Right: infrastructure for the industry and more processing of perishables.
  • (c) Includes statement 3, which is not an aim of the scheme, and omits statement 1.
  • (d) Includes the technology-supply statement 3, which is not an aim.
