Question 30: Economy and Social Development

With reference to "Aam Admi Bima Yojana", consider the following statements :

  1. 1.The member insured under the scheme must be the head of the family or an earning member of the family in a rural landless household.
  2. 2.The member insured must be in the age group of 30 to 65 years.
  3. 3.There is a provision for free scholarship for up to two children of the insured who are studying between classes 9 and 12.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

a1 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Aam Admi Bima Yojana, started in 2007, gives life and disability insurance to the head of the family or an earning member of a rural landless household. The insured person must be aged 18 to 59 years, not 30 to 65. The scheme also gives a scholarship, a small fixed monthly sum, for up to two children of the insured who study in classes 9 to 12. So statements 1 and 3 are correct and statement 2 is wrong.

  • 1. The insured is the head of the family or an earning member of a rural landless household.
  • 2. The age band is 18 to 59 years, not 30 to 65.
  • 3. Scholarship covers up to two children in classes 9 to 12.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: The age band is 18 to 59 years, not 30 to 65.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Scholarship covers up to two children in classes 9 to 12.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Omits the scholarship for children, which the scheme provides.
  • (b) Includes statement 2, whose age band is wrong, and omits statement 1.
  • (c) Right: statements 1 and 3 are correct.
  • (d) Includes statement 2, which gives the wrong age group.
