Question 19: International Relations and Current Affairs

The "New START" treaty was in the news. What is this treaty ?

aIt is a bilateral strategic nuclear arms reduction treaty between the USA and the Russian Federation
bIt is a multilateral energy security cooperation treaty among the members of the East Asia Summit
cIt is a treaty between the Russian Federation and the European Union for the energy security cooperation
dIt is a multilateral cooperation treaty among the BRICS countries for the promotion of trade

AnswerThe answer is (a).

New START is the bilateral treaty between the USA and the Russian Federation, signed in Prague in April 2010 and in force from February 2011, that caps each side's deployed strategic nuclear warheads at 1,550 and its deployed launchers at 700, with inspections to check compliance. It followed START I and the Moscow Treaty. It is not multilateral and has nothing to do with energy security or BRICS trade. Remember: START means Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: a bilateral nuclear arms reduction treaty between the USA and Russia.
  • (b) It is not a multilateral energy treaty and has no link to the East Asia Summit.
  • (c) It is not about energy and is not between Russia and the European Union.
  • (d) It is not a BRICS trade treaty.
