Question 75: Geography

Rivers that pass through Himachal Pradesh are

aBeas and Chenab only
bBeas and Ravi only
cChenab, Ravi and Satluj only
dBeas, Chenab, Ravi, Satluj and Yamuna

AnswerThe answer is (d).

All five rivers named flow through Himachal Pradesh. The Satluj, Beas, Ravi and Chenab (formed by the Chandra and Bhaga at Tandi in Lahaul) rise in or cross the state and drain into the Indus system, and the Yamuna flows along its south-eastern border near Paonta Sahib. Hence the option listing all five is correct. Remember: Himachal = Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Yamuna.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Leaves out the Ravi, Satluj and Yamuna.
  • (b) Leaves out the Chenab, Satluj and Yamuna.
  • (c) Leaves out the Beas and the Yamuna.
  • (d) Right: all five rivers pass through the state.
