Question 42: International Relations and Current Affairs
Which one of the following is not related to United Nations ?
aMultilateral Investment Guarantee Agency
bInternational Finance Corporation
cInternational Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes
dBank for International Settlements
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) are all members of the World Bank Group, which belongs to the UN system. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), based in Basel, was set up in 1930 and is owned by central banks; it is not a UN body. Remember: BIS = the central banks' bank, outside the UN.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) MIGA is a World Bank Group member and part of the UN system.
- (b) IFC is a World Bank Group member.
- (c) ICSID is a World Bank Group body for investment disputes.
- (d) Right: BIS is owned by central banks and is not part of the UN.
