Question 41: International Relations and Current Affairs
Consider the following countries :
- 1.Brazil
- 2.Mexico
- 3.South Africa
According to UNCTAD, which of the above is/are categorized as “Emerging Economies” ?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Brazil, Mexico and South Africa are all large middle-income developing economies with substantial industry, deep capital markets and growing weight in world trade, and they are routinely listed among emerging economies by international bodies. All three are therefore included. Remember: standard emerging-economy examples include Brazil, Russia, India, China, Mexico and South Africa.
- 1. Brazil is a large middle-income emerging economy.
- 2. Mexico is an emerging economy with a large manufacturing and export base.
- 3. South Africa is Africa's most industrialised emerging economy.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Brazil is a large middle-income emerging economy.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (b) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Mexico is an emerging economy with a large manufacturing and export base.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Brazil alone omits Mexico and South Africa.
- (b) Omits Mexico, also an emerging economy.
- (c) Omits Brazil, also an emerging economy.
- (d) Right: all three are emerging economies.
