Question 75: Economy and Social Development
During which Five Year Plan was the Emergency clamped, new elections took place and the Janata Party was elected ?
aThird
bFourth
cFifth
dSixth
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Fifth Five-Year Plan (1974-79) covered the Emergency (June 1975 to March 1977) and the 1977 election that brought the Janata Party to power. The Janata government ended the Fifth Plan a year early, in 1978, and started a rolling plan. The Third Plan ran 1961-66, the Fourth 1969-74 and the Sixth 1980-85.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Third Plan ran 1961-66, before the Emergency.
- (b) The Fourth Plan ran 1969-74, before the Emergency.
- (c) Right: the Fifth Plan period saw the Emergency and the Janata victory.
- (d) The Sixth Plan began in 1980, after the Janata government.
