Question 7: Economy and Social Development
Which one of the following pairs is not correctly matched?
aJapan : Nikkei
bSingapore : Shcomp
cUK : FTSE
dUSA : Nasdaq
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Shcomp is the ticker for the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index, so it belongs to China and not Singapore. Singapore's main stock index is the Straits Times Index (STI). The other pairs are correct: Nikkei is Japan's benchmark, FTSE (as in FTSE 100) is the London index, and Nasdaq is the New York-based exchange and index heavy in technology stocks.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: the Nikkei 225 is the main index of Japan.
- (b) Not correctly matched: Shcomp is Shanghai Composite (China); Singapore's index is the Straits Times Index.
- (c) Correct: FTSE indices, such as the FTSE 100, track London-listed shares.
- (d) Correct: Nasdaq is a US exchange and index.
