Question 5: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements:
- 1.MMTC Limited is India's largest international trading organisation.
- 2.Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited has been set up by MMTC jointly with the Government of Orissa.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Both statements are correct. MMTC (Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation) is a public-sector company usually described as India's largest international trading organisation, dealing in minerals, metals and agro products. Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL), the steel plant at Duburi in Jajpur district, was promoted by MMTC together with Orissa government agencies. NINL has since been sold to the Tata Steel group (2022), so the facts describe its origin.
- 1. MMTC is described as India's largest international trading organisation.
- 2. NINL was set up by MMTC jointly with Orissa government agencies.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: MMTC is described as India's largest international trading organisation.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: NINL was set up by MMTC jointly with Orissa government agencies.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Wrong: statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Right: MMTC is India's largest international trading organisation and NINL was set up by MMTC with Orissa.
- (d) Wrong: both statements are correct.
