Question 42: Geography

Cape Canaveral, the site from which space shuttles are launched is located on the coast of

aFlorida
bVirginia
cNorth Carolina
dSouth Carolina

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Cape Canaveral is on the Atlantic coast of central Florida, USA, next to the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island. Space shuttles, and most American crewed and satellite launches, took off from here. Virginia has the Wallops Island flight facility, but it is not the shuttle site. North and South Carolina have no launch site of this kind.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: Cape Canaveral is on the Florida coast.
  • (b) Virginia has the Wallops launch facility, not Cape Canaveral.
  • (c) North Carolina has no such spaceport.
  • (d) South Carolina has no such spaceport.
