Question 41: Geography

Which one of the following rivers does not originate in India ?

aBeas
bChenab
cRavi
dSutlej

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The Sutlej rises in Tibet, near Lake Rakshastal close to Mansarovar, and enters India through the Shipki La pass in Himachal Pradesh. The Beas rises near the Rohtang Pass, the Ravi in the Himachal Himalaya near Bara Bhangal, and the Chenab is formed by the Chandra and Bhaga rivers that meet at Tandi in Lahaul. All three of those begin in India.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Beas rises near the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh.
  • (b) The Chenab is formed in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh, by the Chandra and Bhaga.
  • (c) The Ravi rises in the Himachal Himalaya.
  • (d) Right: the Sutlej originates in Tibet, not India.
