Question 31: Geography

Elephant Pass, which is frequently in the news, is mentioned in the context of the affairs of which one of the following ?

aBangladesh
bIndia
cNepal
dSri Lanka

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Elephant Pass is a narrow causeway-like strip of land linking the Jaffna peninsula with the mainland of northern Sri Lanka, and was a key battleground in the civil war between the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE. It was in the news in January 2009 when the army recaptured it. It has nothing to do with Bangladesh, India or Nepal.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Bangladesh has no Elephant Pass.
  • (b) India has no strategic pass of this name in the news at the time.
  • (c) Nepal has no Elephant Pass.
  • (d) Right: Elephant Pass is in Sri Lanka.
