Question 24: Geography

Among the following, who are the Agaria community ?

aA traditional toddy tappers community of Andhra Pradesh
bA traditional fishing community of Maharashtra
cA traditional silk-weaving community of Karnataka
dA traditional salt pan workers community of Gujarat

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The Agariyas are a community of salt-pan workers who make salt by evaporating brine in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, living and working in the desert salt flats for much of the year. They are not toddy tappers, fishermen or silk weavers. Remember Agariya with salt and the Rann of Kutch.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Toddy tapping is associated with other communities of Andhra Pradesh, not the Agariyas.
  • (b) Not a fishing community of Maharashtra.
  • (c) Not a silk-weaving community of Karnataka.
  • (d) Right: Agariyas are the salt-pan workers of Gujarat.
