Question 116: International Relations and Current Affairs

Which one of the following pairs of countries fought wars over a region called Ogaden ?

aEritrea and Sudan
bEthiopia and Somalia
cKenya and Somalia
dEthiopia and Sudan

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Ethiopia and Somalia fought over the Ogaden, a largely Somali-inhabited region of eastern Ethiopia, most notably in the Ogaden War of 1977-78, when Somalia invaded and was driven back with Soviet and Cuban support for Ethiopia. The dispute over the region has continued since. Eritrea, Sudan and Kenya were not the main parties to the Ogaden wars.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Eritrea and Sudan were not the parties to the Ogaden wars.
  • (b) Right: Ethiopia and Somalia fought over the Ogaden.
  • (c) Kenya and Somalia disputed a different border region, not the Ogaden.
  • (d) Sudan was not a party to the Ogaden wars.
