Question 69: Geography
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Chikmagalur is well-known for sugar production.
- 2.Mandya is well-known as a coffee-producing region.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Both statements are wrong, because the places are swapped. Chikmagalur, in Karnataka, is well known for coffee, and Mandya, in the Cauvery basin, is known for sugarcane and its sugar industry. Karnataka is India's largest coffee-producing State, with Kodagu (Coorg), Chikmagalur and Hassan the main districts.
- 1. Chikmagalur is known for coffee, not sugar.
- 2. Mandya is known for sugar, not coffee.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Chikmagalur is known for coffee, not sugar.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: Mandya is known for sugar, not coffee.
Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Chikmagalur is known for coffee, not sugar.
- (b) Mandya is known for sugar, not coffee.
- (c) Both statements are wrong, so both cannot be correct.
- (d) Each place is credited with the other's product, so neither statement is correct.
