Question 50: Geography

Which one of the following cities is nearest to the equator?

aColombo

cManila
dSingapore

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Singapore lies about 1 degree 17 minutes north of the equator, the nearest of the four cities. Jakarta is about 6 degrees south, Colombo about 7 degrees north and Manila about 14.6 degrees north. Latitude measures angular distance from the equator, so the smaller the latitude, the nearer the city.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Colombo is about 7 degrees north.
  • (b) Jakarta is about 6 degrees south.
  • (c) Manila is about 14.6 degrees north, the farthest of the four.
  • (d) Singapore is about 1.3 degrees north, the nearest.
