India reached the semi-finals of the football tournament at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and finished fourth. Under coach Syed Abdul Rahim, India beat Australia 4-2 in the quarter-final, lost to Yugoslavia in the semi-final and then lost the bronze-medal match to Bulgaria. India has played the Olympic football tournament several times, including 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1960.
