Question 38: Polity and Governance
Which was the Capital of Andhra State when it was made a separate State in the year 1953?
aGuntur
bKurnool
cNellore

AnswerThe answer is (b).
Andhra State was carved out of Madras State and came into being on 1 October 1953, after the death of Potti Sriramulu following his fast for a separate Telugu-speaking State. Its capital was Kurnool. Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1956 by merging Andhra State with the Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad State, and Hyderabad then became the capital.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Guntur was not the capital of Andhra State.
- (b) Kurnool was the capital from 1953 to 1956.
- (c) Nellore was not the capital.
- (d) Warangal was in Hyderabad State then, not in Andhra State.
