Question 11: Economy and Social Development
In August 2006, the Government of India notified the Rural Electrification Policy. This policy aims at provision of access to all households by which year?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Rural Electrification Policy 2006, notified in August 2006, set the goal of electricity access for all households by 2009. It also aimed at quality and reliable power at reasonable rates, and a minimum lifeline consumption of one unit per household per day as a merit good by 2012. Do not mix the two: access for all by 2009, lifeline consumption by 2012. It works alongside the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 2008 is too early; the policy's household access target was 2009.
- (b) 2009 is the target year for access to all households.
- (c) 2010 is not the household access target.
- (d) 2012 is the target for the lifeline consumption level, not for access.
