Question 75: Geography
Assertion (A): River Kalinadi is an east-flowing river in the southern part of India. Reason (R): The Deccan Plateau is higher along its western edge and gently slopes towards the Bay of Bengal in the east.
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Kali river of Karnataka rises in the Western Ghats and flows west into the Arabian Sea near Karwar, so the Assertion is false. The Reason is true: the Deccan Plateau stands higher in the west and tilts gently east towards the Bay of Bengal. That tilt explains the long east-flowing rivers such as the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri, but not a west-flowing river like the Kali.
- A. The Kali flows west into the Arabian Sea.
- R. The Deccan Plateau is higher in the west and slopes east.
How you could have got this
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) A is false, so it cannot be explained by R.
- (b) A is false, so both cannot be true.
- (c) A is false, so this fails.
- (d) Correct: A is false and R is true.
