Question 53: History and Culture

Which one of the following was associated with Acharya Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan Movement at the beginning of the movement?

aUdayagiri
bRapur
cPochampalli
dVenkatagiri

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Vinoba Bhave's Bhoodan movement began at Pochampalli in Nalgonda district (then Hyderabad State, now Telangana) in April 1951, when the landlord Vedire Ramachandra Reddy offered 100 acres for landless Dalit families. Bhave was then touring Telangana on foot, which had seen a peasant uprising. Rapur, Udayagiri and Venkatagiri are other places in the south, not the starting point.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Udayagiri was not the starting point of Bhoodan.
  • (b) Rapur was not the starting point of Bhoodan.
  • (c) Correct: the movement began at Pochampalli.
  • (d) Venkatagiri was not the starting point of Bhoodan.
