Question 141: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Kofi Annan – the UN Secretary-General is from Nigeria.
  2. 2.Kofi Annan is the first UN Secretary-General to be appointed from the ranks of the United Nations staff.
  3. 3.Kofi Annan was appointed for a second term to the office of the UN Secretary-General.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

a1, 2 and 3
b1 and 2 only
c2 and 3 only
d1 and 3 only

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Kofi Annan is from Ghana, not Nigeria, so statement 1 is false. He rose through the UN's own staff, which made him the first Secretary-General chosen from within the UN ranks, so statement 2 is correct. He was reappointed for a second term from 2002, so statement 3 is correct.

  • 1. Annan is from Ghana.
  • 2. He was the first Secretary-General chosen from the UN staff.
  • 3. He served a second term, from 2002.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Annan is from Ghana.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 1 is wrong: he is from Ghana.
  • (b) Statement 1 is wrong, and it omits statement 3.
  • (c) Correct: statements 2 and 3 hold.
  • (d) Statement 1 is wrong, and it omits statement 2.
