Question 67: Polity and Governance

Consider the following:

  1. 1.Disputes with mobile cellular companies
  2. 2.Motor accident cases
  3. 3.Pension cases For which of the above are Lok Adalats held?
a1 only
b1 and 2 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Lok Adalats, set up under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, settle disputes by compromise without court fees. They deal with motor accident claims, pension and other service matters, bank recoveries, family disputes and, through Permanent Lok Adalats, disputes with public utility services such as telecom. All three listed matters are covered.

  • 1. Telecom disputes are public utility service disputes taken up by Permanent Lok Adalats.
  • 2. Motor accident claims are a main business of Lok Adalats.
  • 3. Pension cases are taken up in Lok Adalats.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Telecom disputes are public utility service disputes taken up by Permanent Lok Adalats.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) and (b) go: each of them leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Pension cases are taken up in Lok Adalats.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Leaves out motor accident and pension cases, both handled.
  • (b) Leaves out pension cases, which are handled.
  • (c) Leaves out disputes with telecom companies, which are handled.
  • (d) Correct: all three are taken up by Lok Adalats.
