Question 32: Geography

For which one of the following, is Satara well-known?

aThermal power plant
bWind energy plant
cHydro-electric plant
dNuclear Power plant

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Satara, in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, is best known for its wind farms on the high ridges near Vankusawade, among the largest wind power clusters in India. It is not known for a big coal-fired or nuclear plant. Remember Satara with wind energy, Jaisalmer with wind in Rajasthan and Muppandal with wind in Tamil Nadu.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) No major thermal plant is Satara's claim to fame.
  • (b) Correct: Satara is known for wind energy plants.
  • (c) Koyna hydro project is also in Satara district, but the key chooses wind.
  • (d) No nuclear power plant is at Satara.

Worth knowing: The Koyna hydroelectric project is also in Satara district, so (c) can be argued; the key goes with wind energy.
