Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b1 and 2
c2 and 3
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Statement 1 is wrong: India was the first country in the world to adopt a national family planning programme, in 1952. Statement 2 is right: the National Population Policy 2000 aims at replacement-level fertility by 2010 and a population of about 111 crore. Statement 3 is right: Kerala was the first state to reach replacement-level fertility.

  • 1. India was the first country to adopt a national family planning programme.
  • 2. The National Population Policy 2000 aims at replacement-level fertility by 2010.
  • 3. Kerala was the first state to reach replacement-level fertility.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: India was the first country to adopt a national family planning programme.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 1 is false: India was the first country.
  • (b) Includes statement 1, which is false, and drops statement 3.
  • (c) Correct: statements 2 and 3.
  • (d) Statement 1 is false.
