Question 19: Geography

The great Asian river Mekong does not run through

aChina
bMalaysia
cCambodia
dLaos

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The Mekong rises on the Tibetan plateau and flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam before reaching the South China Sea. Malaysia is not on its course; its rivers drain separately, on the Malay peninsula and Borneo. Remember that the Mekong has six riparian countries, and that it is the longest river of South-East Asia.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Mekong rises in China (Yunnan, from Tibet).
  • (b) Correct: the Mekong does not run through Malaysia.
  • (c) The Mekong flows through Cambodia, where it meets the Tonle Sap.
  • (d) The Mekong flows through Laos, forming part of its border with Thailand.
