Question 25: Geography

Which one among the following States is smallest in area?

aAndhra Pradesh
bGujarat
cKarnataka

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Tamil Nadu covers about 1.3 lakh square km (130,058), the smallest of the four. Gujarat has about 1.96 lakh, Karnataka about 1.92 lakh, and Andhra Pradesh had about 2.75 lakh at the time of the question (about 1.63 lakh since Telangana was formed in 2014, still larger than Tamil Nadu). Remember the order of area: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Andhra Pradesh was the largest of the four then, and is still bigger than Tamil Nadu.
  • (b) Gujarat is about 1.96 lakh square km.
  • (c) Karnataka is about 1.92 lakh square km.
  • (d) Correct: Tamil Nadu, about 1.3 lakh square km.
