Question 21: Geography

Among the following cities, which one is at the highest altitude above mean sea level?

aBangalore
bDelhi
cJodhpur
dNagpur

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Bangalore stands at about 920 metres above mean sea level on the Mysore plateau, well above Delhi (about 215 m), Jodhpur (about 230 m) and Nagpur (about 310 m). This altitude explains Bangalore's mild climate despite its tropical latitude. Of the other three, Nagpur is the highest, on the Deccan's northern edge.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: Bangalore, about 920 m.
  • (b) Delhi is about 215 m, on the Indo-Gangetic plain.
  • (c) Jodhpur is about 230 m, at the edge of the Thar.
  • (d) Nagpur is about 310 m, lower than Bangalore.
