Question 20: Polity and Governance

As per Indian Protocol, who among the following ranks highest in the order of precedence?

aDeputy Prime Minister
bFormer President
cGovernor of a State within his state
dSpeaker of Lok Sabha

AnswerThe answer is (c).

In the Warrant of Precedence, a Governor of a State ranks fourth, right after the Prime Minister, but only within his own State. The order runs: President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governor within his State, then Former Presidents and the Deputy Prime Minister, and then the Chief Justice of India and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Of the four options, the Governor within his State ranks highest.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Deputy Prime Minister ranks below the Governor in his State and below former Presidents.
  • (b) Former Presidents rank fifth, below the Governor within his State.
  • (c) Correct: the Governor ranks fourth within his own State.
  • (d) The Speaker shares sixth place with the Chief Justice, below the other three.
