Question 98: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following countries:

  1. 1.Angola
  2. 2.Colombia
  3. 3.Congo
  4. 4.Sudan

Which of these countries has/have been suffering from civil war?

a1 only
b2 and 3
c4 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (d).

All four were torn by civil war around 2001: Angola in the war between the government and UNITA, Colombia in its conflict with leftist guerrillas and paramilitaries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the war that began in 1998, and Sudan in its north-south war.

  • 1. Angola: the war between the government and UNITA.
  • 2. Colombia: the conflict with guerrillas and paramilitaries.
  • 3. Congo: the war that began in 1998.
  • 4. Sudan: the north-south civil war.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Angola: the war between the government and UNITA.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Colombia: the conflict with guerrillas and paramilitaries.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Angola was not the only one.
  • (b) Colombia and Congo were not the only two.
  • (c) Sudan was not the only one.
  • (d) Right: all four.
