  1. 1.Under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, the food grains are available to the poorest of the poor families at Rs 2 per kg for wheat and Rs 3 per kg for rice.
  2. 2.Under the National Old Age Pension Scheme, the old and destitute are provided Rs 75 per month as Central pension, in addition to the amount provided by most State Governments.
  3. 3.Government of India has allocated 25 kg food grains per Below Poverty Line family per month, at less than half the economic cost.

Which of these statements are correct?

a1 and 2
b1 and 3
c2 and 3
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Statement 1 is true: Antyodaya Anna Yojana, launched in December 2000, gave the poorest families grain at Rs 2 a kg for wheat and Rs 3 a kg for rice. Statement 2 is true: the National Old Age Pension Scheme gave Rs 75 a month as central assistance, in addition to what most states paid. Statement 3 is not accepted: grain for BPL families was issued at about half of the economic cost, not less than half, and the monthly quantity was revised more than once in these years.

  • 1. AAY grain was Rs 2 a kg for wheat and Rs 3 a kg for rice.
  • 2. The old age pension gave Rs 75 a month as central assistance.
  • 3. BPL grain was priced at about half the economic cost, and the quantity was revised.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: BPL grain was priced at about half the economic cost, and the quantity was revised.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: statements 1 and 2.
  • (b) Includes statement 3, which the given answer rejects.
  • (c) Leaves out statement 1 and includes 3.
  • (d) Includes statement 3, which is not accepted.
