Question 34: Basic Numeracy
A train of length 150 metres, moving at a speed of 90 km/hr can cross a 200-metre bridge in
a8 seconds
b14 seconds
c6 seconds
d15 seconds
AnswerThe answer is (b).
To cross a bridge the train must cover its own length plus the length of the bridge: 150 + 200 = 350 m. Its speed is 90 km/h = 90 x 5/18 = 25 m/s. Time = 350 / 25 = 14 seconds.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 8 s would cover only 200 m at 25 m/s, the bridge alone.
- (b) Right: 350 m / 25 m/s = 14 s.
- (c) 6 s would cover only 150 m, the train's own length.
- (d) 15 s would cover 375 m, more than the 350 m needed.
