Question 33: Polity and Governance

The members of the Constituent Assembly which drafted the Constitution of India were

anominated by the British Parliament
bnominated by the Governor General
celected by the Legislative Assemblies of various provinces
delected by the Indian National Congress and Muslim League

AnswerThe answer is (c).

The Constituent Assembly was formed under the Cabinet Mission plan in 1946. Its members for British India were elected indirectly by the provincial Legislative Assemblies, in proportion to population among the communities, while the princely states sent nominees. It was neither nominated by the British Parliament or the Governor General, nor elected by the Congress and Muslim League as parties, although the Congress won most of the seats.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The British Parliament did not nominate members.
  • (b) The Governor General did not nominate the British Indian members.
  • (c) Right: the provincial Legislative Assemblies elected the members indirectly.
  • (d) Members were elected by provincial assemblies, not by the two parties.
