Question 23: Economy and Social Development

India has the maximum volume of foreign trade with

aUSA
bJapan
cGermany
dUAE

AnswerThe answer is (a).

In 2000-01 the United States was India's largest trading partner, with the highest combined exports and imports, ahead of Japan, Germany and the UAE. Garments, textiles, gems and jewellery made the USA India's biggest export market. Rankings move with time: in later years China and the UAE have also come to the top of the list.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: the USA was India's largest trading partner then.
  • (b) Japan was a major partner but smaller than the USA.
  • (c) Germany was a major European partner but smaller than the USA.
  • (d) The UAE ranked lower in the early 2000s; its trade with India grew later.
