Question 136: Science and Technology
A man whose blood group is not known meets with a serious accident and needs blood transfusion immediately. Which one of the blood groups mentioned below and readily available in the hospital will be safe for transfusion?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Blood group O Rh-negative is the universal donor type: its red cells carry neither A nor B antigens nor the Rh antigen, so they do not set off a reaction in any recipient. AB Rh-positive is the universal recipient but cannot be given safely to everyone. Remember that in an emergency with an unknown blood group, O negative is the safe choice.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: O negative.
- (b) O positive can cause a reaction in an Rh-negative recipient.
- (c) AB carries both A and B antigens and can harm patients with A, B or O blood.
- (d) AB positive carries both A and B antigens and the Rh antigen.
