Question 135: Science and Technology
In the eye donation, which part of the eye is transplanted from the donor?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
In eye donation only the cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye, is transplanted, restoring sight to people blind from corneal damage. The cornea has no blood supply, so rejection is rare. The retina and the whole eye cannot be transplanted because the optic nerve cannot be reconnected, and a damaged lens is replaced with an artificial lens. Remember that donated eyes must be removed within hours of death.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the cornea.
- (b) A diseased lens is replaced by an artificial lens.
- (c) The retina cannot be transplanted.
- (d) The whole eye cannot be transplanted.
