Question 99: Science and Technology
Consider the following features of newer models of motor cars: I. Radial tyres II. Streamlined body III. Multipoint fuel injection IV. Catalytic converter with exhaust Which of these features make the newer models of motor cars more fuel-efficient?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Fuel efficiency comes from less drag and better combustion. A streamlined body cuts air resistance, and multipoint fuel injection delivers the right amount of fuel to each cylinder, improving combustion and mileage. A catalytic converter only cleans exhaust gases and does not save fuel. Radial tyres improve grip and tyre life, and the key does not count them as a fuel-saving feature.
- I. Radial tyres mainly improve grip and tyre life; the key does not count them as the fuel-saving feature.
- II. A streamlined body cuts air resistance.
- III. Multipoint fuel injection improves combustion and mileage.
- IV. A catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions and does not save fuel.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) II is right, but the key does not count radial tyres in I as fuel-saving.
- (b) Right: streamlined body and multipoint fuel injection raise fuel efficiency.
- (c) IV is wrong: a catalytic converter cuts pollution, not fuel use.
- (d) IV is wrong, and it includes I while leaving out II.
Worth knowing: Radial tyres also lower rolling resistance and save some fuel, so statement I is arguable; (b) remains the best fit.
