Question 77: Geography

Consider the following statements about the megacities of India: I. Population of each megacity is more than 5 million. II. All the megacities are important sea ports. III. Megacities are either national or State capitals. Which of these statements are correct?

aI, II and III
bI and II
cII and III
dI and III

AnswerThe answer is (d).

In the usage of the time, a megacity was a city of more than 5 million people. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad fit, and every one is a national or State capital. But they are not all sea ports: Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad are inland. So I and III are correct and II is false.

  • I. Each megacity has a population of more than 5 million.
  • II. Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad are inland, not sea ports.
  • III. Each megacity is a national or State capital.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) II is false, since Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad are not sea ports.
  • (b) II is false, and it leaves out III.
  • (c) II is false, and it leaves out I.
  • (d) Right: I and III are correct.
