Question 60: History and Culture
The Indian National Army (INA) came into existence in 1943 in
aJapan
bBurma
cSingapore
dMalaya
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The first Indian National Army was raised in 1942 by Mohan Singh with Japanese help, and was disbanded that December. The INA was revived in 1943 at Singapore, when Rash Behari Bose handed over to Subhas Chandra Bose in July 1943. Bose proclaimed the Provisional Government of Free India at Singapore on 21 October 1943 and made it the base of the Azad Hind Fauj.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Japan helped the INA but it was not formed there.
- (b) Burma was a base for the later campaign, not where the INA came into being.
- (c) Right: the revived INA took shape in Singapore in 1943.
- (d) The INA's reorganisation under Bose and the Provisional Government's proclamation took place at Singapore, not elsewhere in Malaya.
