Question 48: Geography

Which one of the following lakes forms an international boundary between Tanzania and Uganda?

aChad
bMalawi
cVictoria
dZambezi

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, is shared by three countries: Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. It therefore forms part of the boundary between Tanzania and Uganda. Lake Chad lies where Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria meet, Lake Malawi lies between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and the Zambezi is a river, not a lake.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Lake Chad is bordered by Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria, not Tanzania or Uganda.
  • (b) Lake Malawi (Nyasa) is shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, not Uganda.
  • (c) Right: Lake Victoria is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
  • (d) The Zambezi is a river, not a lake.
