Question 143: Basic Numeracy
Which one of the following has a greater perimeter than the rest?
aA square with an area of 36 sq. cm
bAn equilateral triangle with a side of 9 cm
cA rectangle with 10 cm as length and 40 sq. cm as area
dA circle with a radius of 4 cm
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The square of area 36 sq cm has side 6 cm, so its perimeter is 24 cm. The equilateral triangle has perimeter 3 x 9 = 27 cm. The rectangle of length 10 cm and area 40 sq cm has width 4 cm, so its perimeter is 2 x 14 = 28 cm. The circle of radius 4 cm has circumference 2 x pi x 4, about 25.1 cm. The rectangle has the greatest perimeter.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The square's perimeter is 24 cm, less than 28 cm.
- (b) The triangle's perimeter is 27 cm, less than 28 cm.
- (c) Right: the rectangle's perimeter is 28 cm.
- (d) The circle's circumference is about 25.1 cm, less than 28 cm.
