Question 108: Science and Technology
Match List I (Drugs / Chemicals) with List II (Their uses) and select the correct answer using the codes given below the Lists: List I I. Atropine II. Ether III. Nitro-glycerine IV. Pyrethrin List II A) Local anaesthesia B) Heart trouble C) Dilation of pupil D) Mosquito control Codes:
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Atropine dilates the pupil and is used in eye examinations. Ether, a volatile anaesthetic, is matched with anaesthesia, the only anaesthesia entry in List II. Nitroglycerine is used for heart trouble such as angina, because it widens blood vessels. Pyrethrin, from chrysanthemum flowers, is an insecticide used for mosquito control. Remember: atropine means pupil, nitroglycerine means angina, pyrethrin means insects.
- I. Atropine - dilation of pupil (C).
- II. Ether - anaesthesia (A).
- III. Nitroglycerine - heart trouble (B).
- IV. Pyrethrin - mosquito control (D).
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Gives atropine local anaesthesia and ether pupil dilation.
- (b) Wrong. Same atropine and ether swap, and swaps nitroglycerine and pyrethrin.
- (c) Wrong. Swaps nitroglycerine and pyrethrin.
- (d) Right. Atropine-C, Ether-A, Nitroglycerine-B, Pyrethrin-D.
