Question 70: History and Culture

The loss of Qandahar was a big blow to the Mughal empire from the viewpoint of

aNatural resources
bBuffer territory
cCommunication
dStrategic stronghold

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Qandahar was the stronghold that controlled the route between Kabul, Persia and the Indian plains, and so guarded the north-western frontier. Persia took it from the Mughals in 1649, and Mughal attempts to retake it, including Dara Shikoh's siege of 1653, ended in failure and heavy expense. Its loss was therefore a blow to the empire's strategic position more than to its resources or communications.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Qandahar was not valued mainly for natural resources.
  • (b) Buffer territory is close, but the key stresses strategic stronghold.
  • (c) Communication matters, but the key gives strategic stronghold.
  • (d) Right: Qandahar was a key strategic stronghold on the frontier.
