Question 47: Economy and Social Development

Which of the following pairs are correctly matched? I. Dow Jones : New York II. Hang Seng : Seoul III. FTSE-100 : London Select the correct answer using the codes given below:

aI, II and III
bII and III
cI and II
dI and III

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The Dow Jones index tracks leading companies listed in New York, and the FTSE-100 ('Footsie') is the index of the London Stock Exchange. The Hang Seng index belongs to Hong Kong, not Seoul; the South Korean index is the KOSPI. So pairs I and III are correctly matched. Remember the other exchange indices: Nikkei (Tokyo), Sensex (Mumbai).

  • I. The Dow Jones index is a New York index.
  • II. The Hang Seng is Hong Kong's index; Seoul's is the KOSPI.
  • III. The FTSE-100 is London's index.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) II is wrong: Hang Seng is Hong Kong's index.
  • (b) II is wrong, and it leaves out I.
  • (c) II is wrong, and it leaves out III.
  • (d) Right: Dow Jones-New York and FTSE-100-London.
