Question 46: International Relations and Current Affairs

The recent Land Mines Conference to sign the historic treaty was held in the Capital city of

aCanada
bJapan
cSweden
dZimbabwe

AnswerThe answer is (a).

The treaty banning anti-personnel land mines was negotiated through the Ottawa Process and signed in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, in December 1997. The conference there was driven by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. India did not sign. The treaty is therefore called the Ottawa Treaty.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: the signing took place in Ottawa, Canada's capital.
  • (b) Tokyo did not host the land mines conference.
  • (c) Stockholm did not host the land mines conference.
  • (d) Harare did not host the land mines conference.
