Question 43: Economy and Social Development
Human Poverty Index was introduced in the Human Development Report of the year
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Human Poverty Index was introduced in the Human Development Report of 1997. It measured deprivation in longevity, knowledge and standard of living, in contrast to the Human Development Index, which measures achievement. Remember the 1990 start of the HDI and the 1997 start of the HPI.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) 1994 is not the year the HPI was introduced.
- (b) 1995 is not the year the HPI was introduced.
- (c) 1996 is not the year the HPI was introduced.
- (d) Right: the HPI was introduced in the 1997 report.
Worth knowing: UNDP replaced the Human Poverty Index with the Multidimensional Poverty Index in 2010, but the 1997 answer stands.
