Question 91: Geography

Which one of the following countries is the largest producer of fuelwood in the world?

aIndonesia
bRussia
cIndia
dChina

AnswerThe answer is (c).

India is the world's largest producer of fuelwood (wood used as firewood and for making charcoal), because most rural households still cook with wood, crop residue and dung. Indonesia, China and Russia produce less. Remember this as a fact about India's rural energy use.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Indonesia produces less fuelwood than India.
  • (b) Russia's wood goes mostly to industry rather than fuel.
  • (c) Right: India.
  • (d) China produces a lot, but less than India.
