Question 101: Geography

During a flight from Delhi to Tokyo the following are the landing airports: I. Hong Kong II. Hanoi III. Taipei IV. Bangkok The correct sequence of the landing at these airports during an onward journey is

aI, II, III, IV
bIV, II, I, III
cIII, IV, I, II
dIV, I, ii, iii

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Flying east from Delhi towards Tokyo, the stops come in order of longitude: Bangkok (about 100.5°E), Hanoi (about 105.8°E), Hong Kong (about 114°E) and Taipei (about 121.5°E), with Tokyo further east and north. So the sequence is Bangkok, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Taipei: IV, II, I, III.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Puts Hong Kong before Hanoi and Bangkok last, which does not follow the route.
  • (b) Right: Bangkok, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Taipei.
  • (c) Puts Taipei first, but Taipei is the farthest east of the four.
  • (d) Puts Hong Kong before Hanoi, but Hanoi lies west of Hong Kong.
