Question 75: History and Culture

Who among the following leaders did not believe in the drain theory of Dadabhai Naoroji?

aB. G. Tilak
bR. C. Dutt
cM. G. Ranade
dSir Syed Ahmed Khan

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Dadabhai Naoroji's drain theory held that Britain was draining India's wealth through the home charges, salaries, pensions and profits taken out of the country. Tilak, R. C. Dutt (in The Economic History of India) and Ranade supported it. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who urged Muslims to stay away from the Congress and remain loyal to the British, did not. Remember: drain of wealth - Naoroji, Dutt, Ranade, Tilak.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Tilak supported the drain theory.
  • (b) R. C. Dutt supported and documented the drain theory.
  • (c) Ranade supported the drain theory.
  • (d) Right: Sir Syed Ahmad Khan did not accept the drain theory.
