Question 72: Geography

Local supply of coal is not available to

aTISCO, Jamshedpur
bVISL, Bhadravati
cHSL, Durgapur
dHSL, Bhilai

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Ltd at Bhadravati in Karnataka has no coalfield near it; it relied on charcoal from local forests and iron ore from the Baba Budan hills, with other fuel brought from afar. Jamshedpur (TISCO) lies near the Jharia coalfield, Durgapur near the Raniganj coalfield region, and Bhilai draws on coalfields in the same central region. Remember: Bhadravati - charcoal-based and short of coal.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) TISCO at Jamshedpur is close to the Jharia coalfield.
  • (b) Right: Bhadravati has no local coal supply.
  • (c) Durgapur lies close to the Raniganj coalfield region.
  • (d) Bhilai draws on coalfields in the same central region.
